Flaptekst:
The motor vehicle passed from adolescence into manhood in the First World War although the full demonstration of its military potential was not witnessed for another generation until the Second World War. The logistics of battle involve the means of transportation and supply of fighting troops, but whereas the railways in Europe in the war years 1914-18 effectively maintained interior lines of communication, the internal combustion engine as the war progressed began to replace the horse as the power source of the support zones.
Whereas motor vehicles including the new armoured tanks did not change the course of events on the Western front, or any other battle-front, the arteries that fed and preserved the life-lines to the trenches depended increasingly on the petrol engine. The motor vehicle was moreover assigned to traditional Cavalry reconnaissance and patrol missions. Machine-guns and light artillery were also mounted on chassis in the offensive role and for air defence.
This volume both illustrates and describes the enormous variety of these portentous machines tracing the origin of the powered military vehicle to the steam traction engines that preceded the First World War by over fifty years. Converted buses, troop carriers, supply lorries, tractors, motor-cycles, maintenance vehicles and staff cars are featured in these pages as well as the machine-gun carriers, patrol and scout cars, balloon busters and anti-aircraft vehicles deployed on active forward and defensive assignments.
