Hellblazer is the dark story of demon-foiler John Constantine, who first appeared in Saga of the Swamp Thing. Dying of inoperable cancer, he thwarted three demons by selling each of them his soul. Then, he calmly slashed his own wrists. Each demon learned he was about to die, and showed up to claim his prize. Each was shocked, of course, to learn that they had been duped. To keep from sparking a war in Hell, the demons were forced not only to heal Constantine, but to cure his cancer as well. Constantine returned the favor by ever defying them, thumbing his nose at both heaven and hell, and meddling in all manner of celestial affairs.
