Beschrijving
A high quality set of three cups and saucer from the 18th century, done in blue and white on soft-paste porcelain.
The cups and saucers are very finely decorated with a central scene of a typical Chinese landscape, with pagoda, mountains and a sea with fisherman floating in their boats done in a very strong cobalt tint, typical of the decoration on soft-paste porcelain.
Chinese soft-paste porcelain was developed during the 18th century to cater to domestic and international markets. Unlike hard-paste porcelain, which uses kaolin and petuntse (traditional Chinese materials), soft-paste porcelain involved a different composition, often incorporating a mix of clay and glassy substances. It was fired at lower temperatures, resulting in a softer, more delicate body that was somewhat porous and less durable.
Soft-paste porcelain often featured exquisite designs, with painted motifs inspired by traditional Chinese themes such as flowers, landscapes, and mythological scenes. It was prized for its smooth, creamy texture and translucency. Many pieces were highly decorative, reflecting the artistic refinement of the Qing Dynasty. The style was particularly influential in Europe, where it inspired local porcelain industries, such as those at Meissen and Sèvres.
